SCENIC ROUTE
June 10th, 2009
Take a vacation in the city and join us for the opening reception of Scenic Route at Tinlark Gallery on Saturday, June 27, 6-9pm.
Scenic Route explores that sense of discovery and wonder we
all experience on vacation but somehow lose once we return
to our hectic everyday lives in Los Angeles. Artists Ana Serrano,
Katherine Siy and Sarah Stephens, all graduates of Art Center
School of Design, celebrate the amazing little signifiers of our
citified existence, the unique architecture, old signs, and miraculously
adaptable flora and fauna, that go unnoticed as we lead overly-scheduled,
hyper-stimulating lives.
Ana Serrano
is a first generation Mexican-American born in Los Angeles
in 1983. Deriving inspiration from her cultural heritage, Serrano creates
work utilizing a variety of mediums including drawing, collage, sculpture,
and motion. Her work references lives lived in lower socio-economic
positions, with particular interest paid to specific customs and beliefs, as
well as the architecture, fashion, and informal economies present within
this segment of society.
Katherine Siy
grew up experiencing the simple secluded life on the island
of Batanes where technologies we take for granted -- electricity, cellphones,
computers -- are unavailable, but where interpersonal relationships thrive.
Siy's work explores the complexities of the techno-centric lives we've built
around ourselves by placing organic characters denatured by color and pattern
into defined spaces that emphasize their emotional solitude.
Sarah Stephens
is inspired by the photographs she takes during her travels,
as well as photos from the Los Angeles neighborhood where she lives. Her
paintings celebrate the often overlooked, everyday places that people pass
a million times in their busy lives without ever noticing. She feels compelled
to document these buildings and signs before they are replaced by condos or
parking lots and lost forever.
Scenic Route runs June 27 through July 25. For more information, please
contact Cris McCall at cris@tinlark.com. Limited parking is available in
the Crossroads of the World parking lot during the opening reception. The
gallery is open Fridays & Saturdays, 12-5, and by appointment.
